Before you buy headphones, here's what actually separates a good pick from a wrong one.Open-back vs. closed-back.Open-back headphones sound more natural and spacious but leak sound and offer no isolation, making them best for quiet home listening. Closed-back headphones isolate you from the outside world, making them the better choice for commuting, offices, or shared spaces.Comfort over specs.
The best-sounding headphones are worthless if they hurt after 30 minutes. Clamping force, ear cup size, and weight matter as much as sound quality, especially for long listening sessions.Budget tiers.
Sound quality improves fast in the first $100–150 you spend. From $150–350, you're paying for real refinement: better tuning, better drivers, better comfort. DACs & Amps

If your headphones or IEMs sound quiet, flat, or lifeless from your phone or laptop, a DAC/amp can unlock detail and volume your source alone can't provide. Higher-impedance or harder-to-drive headphones benefit the most.DAC vs. Amplifier vs. DAC/AMP Combo?
